Harvia Virta HL90E Virta Series 9.0kW Sauna Heater
The Harvia Virta HL90E is a 9.0kW floor-mounted electric sauna heater for rooms from 177 to 494 cubic feet, built for both home and professional use with a strong stainless steel structure designed for frequent, long sauna sessions. The Virta platform is Harvia's answer to bathers who want a traditional sauna experience - soft, abundant steam and rapid heat-up - in a heater that requires minimal maintenance and holds up to daily use. The black stainless steel body holds 110 lbs of AC3020 stones (3 boxes, 5-10 cm, sold separately) with an efficient air circulation path that heats the sauna quickly. Elements are separated from the stones by design, extending element lifespan and making replacement a pull-out task through the front maintenance hatch without touching the stones. A separate Xenio controller is required and sold separately. 240V/1PH, 60Hz. ETL certified. UL listed. Made in Finland by Harvia.
Virta Series - strength, practicality, and soft steam for frequent bathers
The Virta Series is Harvia's floor-standing electric heater platform built specifically for bathers who use the sauna often and enjoy long sessions. The HL90E is the 9.0kW configuration, suited for rooms from 177 to 494 cubic feet - covering the full range from a compact home sauna to a large family room. The design logic of the Virta is straightforward: a large stone capacity (110 lbs) for soft, consistent steam; separated elements for long service life; a front maintenance hatch for easy access without stone removal; and an efficient air circulation path for quick preheating. It can be installed against a sidewall or in a corner, with just 2" required on all sides from combustible materials - among the tightest clearances in the Harvia electric lineup.
Elements separated from stones - serviceability and löyly quality
The Virta HL90E's heating elements are positioned separately from the stone bed, not embedded within it. This separation serves two purposes. First, the stones never directly contact the element surfaces, which significantly extends element lifespan compared to designs where stones rest on or against the elements - the stones absorb and release heat without the abrasion and thermal cycling that accelerates element wear. Second, when an element does eventually need replacing, it can be pulled out as a complete module through the front maintenance hatch without removing a single stone. This is a practical maintenance advantage for home saunas and an operational advantage for professional facilities where downtime matters. Harvia describes this feature directly: "If you need to replace a heating element, it is a quick and easy task, as you can just pull out the entire heating element module."
Front maintenance hatch - all connections accessible from one side
Every connection point on the Virta HL90E is accessible through a single maintenance hatch on the front face of the heater. Harvia notes there is plenty of room around the connections inside the hatch - wiring, element access, and service points are all reached from the front without moving the heater or removing stones. This means the heater can be positioned with its back and sides at the minimum 2" clearance from combustible materials and all installation and service work is still fully accessible from the front. For a floor-standing heater installed against a sauna wall, this is a meaningful installation and long-term maintenance benefit.

ℹ️ Virta HL90E vs Virta HL90E Combi - standard vs built-in steamer. Virta HL90E (this listing): standard configuration - traditional water-pouring löyly, ladle and bucket used to create steam on demand. Virta HL90E Combi: same 9.0kW heater body with a built-in steamer unit and 5-liter reservoir with automatic refill for hands-free steam management alongside traditional water-pouring. Both share the same room range (177-494 cu ft), 110 lb stone capacity, dimensions, and Virta platform. Choose the HL90E for traditional sauna bathing where steam is created manually. Choose the HL90E Combi for installations where automated steam output alongside traditional löyly is desired.

Why the Harvia Virta HL90E stands out
Built for frequent, long sauna sessions
The Virta Series is Harvia's platform explicitly designed for bathers who use the sauna regularly and stay in for extended sessions. The strong stainless steel structure, separated element design, and 110-lb stone capacity are all chosen to support sustained, repeated use rather than occasional short sessions. Harvia's own description is precise: the Virta's strong structure and exceptional ease of maintenance make it excellently suitable for those who use the sauna often and like to enjoy steam for long periods of time. For a home sauna that runs multiple times a week or a small commercial facility with daily use, the Virta HL90E is the platform built for that pattern.
110 lbs of stones - soft and abundant steam
At 110 lbs, the Virta HL90E's stone load is substantial for a 9.0kW heater. The large stone mass stores significant thermal energy during heat-up and releases it evenly during the session - the steam produced when water is poured on the stones is soft and dense rather than sharp, because the heat comes from a deep, well-charged stone bed rather than directly from the element surface. Efficient air circulation through the stone cage means the sauna heats quickly, and the large stone mass means the heat quality is sustained throughout the session regardless of how many rounds of löyly are poured.
Elements separated from stones - longer lifespan
The Virta HL90E positions its heating elements separately from the stone bed. Stones sit around the elements but do not rest directly on them. This separation eliminates the contact abrasion and concentrated thermal cycling at the element surface that accelerates wear in designs where stones are packed directly against the elements. The result is a measurably longer heating element lifespan. For a heater used frequently over years of service, this separation is one of the most meaningful design decisions in the Virta platform - it reduces replacement frequency and keeps the heater operating at full output for longer between services.
Front hatch maintenance - no stone removal required
When an element needs replacement on the Virta HL90E, the entire element module pulls out through the front maintenance hatch as a single unit. No stones need to be removed, no tools need to reach around the heater body, and no disassembly of the stone cage is required. All wiring connections are also accessible through the same front hatch with room to work. This is a genuine maintenance advantage over heaters that require stone removal and awkward access for element replacement - particularly relevant for a heater that is expected to be in daily use for many years.
2" safety clearances - sidewall or corner installation
The Virta HL90E requires only 2" from combustible materials on all four sides - front, back, left, and right. This is among the tightest safety clearance specifications in the Harvia electric lineup and allows the heater to be positioned in a sauna room corner or against a sidewall with minimal space impact. The compact footprint (16"W x 13"D) combined with the 2" clearances means the HL90E occupies very little floor area relative to its 9.0kW output and 110-lb stone capacity, leaving maximum usable bench and floor space within the sauna room.
Virta Series platform - HL90E and Combi configurations
The HL9U1UL is the standard 9.0kW Virta configuration. The same Virta platform is also available as the HL90E Combi, which adds a built-in steamer with a 5-liter reservoir and automatic refill system for automated steam output alongside traditional water-pouring. The Combi is suited for bathers who want hands-free steam management; the standard HL90E is for those who prefer the traditional ladle-and-bucket löyly experience. Both share the same body, room range, stone capacity, and Virta platform specifications. Designed, engineered, and made in Finland by Harvia. We are an authorized Harvia dealer.

Virta HL90E vs Virta HL60E vs Virta HL120E - selecting the right Virta Series output
The Virta Series covers a range of room sizes across three standard output ratings. Virta HL60E: 6.0kW for rooms from 106 to 318 cu ft - the entry Virta configuration for smaller home saunas and compact sauna rooms. Virta HL90E (this listing): 9.0kW for rooms from 177 to 494 cu ft - the mid-range Virta for medium to large home saunas and small commercial applications where frequent, long-session use is the pattern. Virta HL120E: 12.0kW for rooms from 247 to 636 cu ft - for larger sauna rooms where higher output is required. All three share the same Virta platform features: stainless steel construction, separated elements, front maintenance hatch, pull-out element module, and the same 2" safety clearances. Each is also available in a Combi configuration with built-in steamer. Select the HL90E for the 177-494 cu ft room range where 9.0kW is the appropriate output for the space.
