Hoyer HPL402 Powered / HML400 Manual Patient Lift for Safer and More Comfortable Transfers

Moving a loved one or resident from bed to chair should not cost the caregiver their back. The Hoyer HPL402 from Joerns Healthcare raises and lowers the patient at the press of a button, carrying up to 400 lbs on a low, adjustable base that suits both home care and care facilities. Prefer a lift with no batteries at all? The Hoyer HML400 offers the same 400 lb capacity with a hydraulic pump you operate by hand.

Joerns mounts the HPL402's single-speed actuator in reverse, which leaves the patient extra knee room to sit naturally in the sling. Ergonomic handle grips ease the strain on the caregiver while steering, and a mechanical down-release lever lets you bring the patient down gently even if the power fails.

Adjustable U-Base for Easy Transfers and Toileting

The U-shaped base opens and closes to match the space you are working in. Pull the adjustment handle to unlock it, then move it right to widen the legs or left to bring them together. Spread wide, the legs straddle a chair or commode; closed to 24 inches, the lift rolls through doorways.

At just 4.875 inches of base clearance, the HPL402 slides under many beds and chairs so you can position the patient directly over the seat. Leg guards and caster bumpers absorb knocks before they reach your walls and furniture, and the casters lock with brakes when the lift is parked. The cradle accepts Hoyer slings with chains on its inside attachment points and Partner-style slings on its four outside points.

Warranty length

Joerns covers the lift for one year from the date the original owner buys it. Coverage includes the lifter structure (base, mast, boom, and suspension cradle), the hydraulic pump on the manual HML400, and the electronic control box and actuator on the powered HPL402.

Non-durable components

Rubber parts, plastic parts, the hand pendant, the battery, and painted surfaces are subject to normal wear and are covered for 90 days from the date of purchase.

Exclusions

Damage caused by use in unsuitable environmental conditions or failure to maintain the product in accordance with user and service instructions is not covered. Any alteration, modification, or repair unless performed by or authorized in writing by Joerns Healthcare will void this warranty.

FAQ

What is the difference between the HPL402 and the HML400?
The HPL402 is a powered lift that raises the patient with a push-button hand control and a rechargeable battery. The HML400 is a manual lift that uses a hydraulic pump with a rotating handle and has no electrical parts. Both hold up to 400 lbs.
Can the HPL402 lower a patient without power?
Yes. The mechanical down-release lever lowers the patient in a controlled, gentle descent, and the lift also has an emergency stop.
Will the lift fit under my bed?
The HPL402 has 4.875" of base clearance and the HML400 has 5.25". Measure the space under your bed and compare it with these figures before ordering.
Which slings work with this lift?

IBIS Wheelchair to Car Lift

The IBIS wheelchair to car lift was a game changer for us. My husband has been in a wheelchair for more than 40 years and we have never seen anything like this in the US and had no idea such a lift exist existed.

My guy is hemiplegic and usually able to stand pivot into the car but he broke his femur in November 2025 and had to be non-weight bearing for 3 months. He lost so much strength and ability that he could no longer do any kind of safe transfer.

Our friend found the IBIS wheelchair to car lift online and we decided to take the risk. It was worth every penny and more. Within a day of its arrival we were mobile and in and out of the car again.
