The flange sits around the heater at that opening and covers them, so the heater looks built in rather than dropped into a hole. The flange is stainless steel, in keeping with the heater itself. It is a stand-alone accessory: it does not change how the heater performs, and it does not replace the clearances in the heater's own manual.
